HISTORY

Bamberg used to be one of the largest hop trading centers in Germany, and because of its proximity to Bohemia hops from there were traded frequently. And Bohemian hops were considered particularly high-quality in Graser’s day. In our pale lager, Bohemian aroma hops provide a pronounced hoppy note. We also use crafted water for brewing, which is softened before the brewing process as it was done in Graser’s time. The result is a smooth lager with a pleasant bitterness, a well-rounded and mellow aroma, and an almost creamy mouthfeel.

OUT OF TRADITION

Our Promise

wheat

Our beers are just like Konrad Graser: full of character.

Graser beers are unlike any others. Each one has a unique craft feature that sets it apart from normal beers. This distinctive technique in the brewing process gives Graser beers their unmistakable flavor. That’s why each one tastes like no other. It’s all part of our tradition.

Original recipes based on Bamberg’s oldest brewing tradition

Before Konrad Graser took over Hellerbräu, he ran the former Michaelsberg Brewery for many years as owner and brewmaster. The brewing logs containing his recipes date back to that time. The Michaelsberg Brewery, with documented brewing rights dating back to 1122, is considered Bamberg’s oldest brewing tradition.

family-tree

Graser beers are a family affair today, just as they were back then.

What would Konrad Graser say about the fact that his descendant, Matthias Trum, is breathing new life into his beers? He would surely be proud. Today, Matthias Trum—the sixth generation of his family—runs Hellerbräu, which his great-great-great-grandfather took over after his time at Michaelsberg.

It was truly something special to uncover Konrad Graser’s handwritten notes and brew his historic recipes today. Even as a master brewer, that’s not something you get to do every day.
